Why Rest Feels So Hard When You Live With Chronic Pain

For years I thought I was bad at resting.

No matter how tired I was, my body stayed tense.

My mind stayed alert.
Lying down didn’t feel peaceful — it felt uncomfortable.

Living with chronic pain, trauma, and a constantly overwhelmed nervous system had taught my body one thing:
Stay ready. Stay guarded. Stay awake.

What I later learned is that rest isn’t just about stopping activity.
It’s about feeling safe enough to slow down.

When your nervous system has spent years in survival mode, relaxation can actually feel unfamiliar or even threatening.

This is why so many people with chronic illness and neurodivergence struggle with rest.

We don’t need more discipline.
We need more comfort.

This is what led me to create the concept of nesting — building supportive, comfort-first spaces that gently help the body feel safe again.

Not perfect spaces.
Not aesthetic spaces.
Safe spaces.

Over time, these small changes can help the body soften out of survival mode and into rest.

If resting feels hard for you, you’re not broken.

Your body has just been protecting you.

And it can learn to rest again — slowly, gently, in comfort.
