Take Control of Your Health: Key Questions to Ask Your GP

How to Advocate for Yourself at GP Appointments

When you’re living with chronic illness or navigating complex health issues, GP appointments can feel overwhelming—especially if you leave feeling unheard or rushed. I’ve been there. That’s why I created a simple, empowering tool to help you make the most of your time with your doctor.

This free downloadable Word document is packed with essential questions you can ask your GP to ensure you’re receiving the care, clarity, and compassion you deserve. From understanding your diagnosis to exploring treatment options, monitoring progress, and seeking support—these prompts help put the power back in your hands.

It also includes a template email you can send to your GP ahead of time to outline what you’d like to discuss—because preparing in advance can reduce anxiety and help you feel more confident and in control.

Here’s what’s inside the toolkit:

  • ✅ Smart, focused questions to ask during your GP appointment
  • ✅ Prompts about diagnosis, treatment, medications, and follow-up
  • ✅ Supportive email template to advocate for your needs
  • ✅ Social media hashtags to raise awareness and build community

Your voice matters. Your symptoms matter. You deserve to be heard. ✨

Subject: Appointment Preparation and Request for Information

Dear Dr. [GP’s Last Name],

I hope this message finds you well. I have an upcoming appointment on [date and time], and I wanted to provide some context and questions to make the most of our time together.

To better advocate for my health and ensure I’m fully informed, I would appreciate it if we could discuss the following during our appointment:

  1. [Briefly list your main concerns or symptoms]
  2. [Questions about diagnosis and understanding]
  3. [Questions about treatment options and medications]
  4. [Monitoring and follow-up inquiries]
  5. [Request for support and resources]

I believe that addressing these points will help us create a comprehensive plan for managing my health. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Looking forward to our appointment.

Best regards,

This is SO helpful. GP appointments always feel like a race against the clock, and my brain usually leaves the building as soon as I sit down. Having these questions (and that email template!) is such a smart way to make sure nothing important gets lost in the shuffle. Thanks for putting this together—it’s seriously such a gift.

Yay, I’m so glad it helps you be clear. I also use chat gpt alot for helping me get my words out in a way they will listen. As my PTSD doesn’t like the doctors dismissals.

Oh, I’m fully on the ChatGPT train. I use it for everything short of walking the dog. Had a medical report that read like ancient hieroglyphics, and ChatGPT explained it better than the doctor—with less condescension, too. Sure, AI will probably enslave us all eventually, but until then? It’s my unpaid, overachieving assistant.
